the way와 how는 같이 쓰지 않는다. 그런데, 그 이유가 무엇인지 궁금해서 영어원서를 찾아 봤다.

먼저 가장 유명한 영문법원서인 Randolph Quirk의 "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" p.1254에서는 이렇게 설명한다.

There is no relative 'how' parallel to 'where, when', and 'why' to express manner with an antecedent noun [4], but only [4a]:

- That's the way how she spoke. [4] X

- That's how she spoke. [4a] O

- That's the way (that) she spoke.[4a] O

근래 유명한 영문법원서인 Rodney Huddleston 의 "The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language" p.1053는 이렇다.

[62]

i) Go back the way [(that) by which you came].

ii) I admired the way [( that) in which she handled the situation].

'How' does not belong to the class of relative words (except very marginally in the fused construction, §6.4), so we cannot have 'the way how she handled the situation'.  Note that if 'way' is replaced by 'manner' the non-'wh' construction is no longer possible: the manner (that) she handled the situation.

Some non-standard dialects differ; hence the line "It ain't what you do, it's the way how you do it" in a rock 'n' roll song.

보통 우리나라 영어강사들은 'the way = how' 이기 때문에 중첩사용할 필요가 없어서 둘 중 하나만 사용한다고 설명한다.

뭐, 아무튼 그렇다는 거고, 근데, It ain't what you do, it's the way how you do it. 이라는 가사가 들어간 록큰롤 노래는 어떤 것인지 구글을 검색해도 안나오는데, 궁금하다.

The habitual aspect, like the continuous aspect, is also a subclass of the imperfective aspect. It is used when an action occurs repetitively and (usually) predictably. English only has two marked ways of expressing habitual aspect: would + base form of the verb (the infinitive without to) and used to + base form of the verb. When we use these structures, we imply that the action occurred habitually in the past, but does not anymore. For example:
  • “When I was young I used to walk to school.”
  • “When I was young I would walk to school.”
Although the meaning in the two examples above is the same, used to and would are not always directly interchangeable. For example, used to, standing alone, conveys habitual aspect, but would doesn’t. Observe what happens if we remove the time marker when I was young:
  • “I used to walk to school.”
  • “I would walk to school.”
When we remove when I was young from the examples, the example using used to retains its habitual aspect, but the example with would doesn’t. Since would can also be used in conditional constructions, we need to include a time marker to clarify when it is being used for the habitual past.
In addition, while used to can be used with both action verbs and stative verbs, would can only be used with action verbs. For example:

이 두 단어는 비슷해 보이지만, 어원은 전혀 다르다.

desert

dessert

그런데, 은어사전인 Urban Dictionary에서 'gone girl'을 검색해보면, "To frame someone for a very serious crime (esp. rape or murder) using elaborate, carefully falsified evidence, while presenting oneself as the victim"로 나온다. 즉, '누군가에게 누명을 뒤집어 씌우다'라는 뜻이다. 어떤 연유로 이런 의미가 되었는지 궁금하다.

O Henry의 단편소설, Next to reading matter를 읽다가 “Benavides was only the chip over the bug.”라는 문장을 맞닥뜨렸다. 고정아 번역본을 찾아보니, "베나비데스는 겉포장이었을 뿐입니다"라고 번역되어 있었다.

a bug under the chip(숨은 의도) 이라는 표현을 위치만 바꿔서 O Henry 식으로 표현한 것이다. O Henry 소설을 읽다보면 이런 식의 말장난(?)이랄까 언어유희를 심심찮게 볼 수 있다.

a bug under the chip 이란 표현은 미국 남부지방에서 주로 사용했던 구식표현으로서, 우리 말로는 '저의, 진짜 목적' 정도로 해석할 수 있겠다. 1900년대 초중반까지는 이 표현을 정치적 수사로 많이 사용했던 모양이다.

An old expression, common in the South, meaning an ulterior motive.

ⓐ 위 명언에서 굳이 day in and day out 이라고 표현한 이유가 있을 것 같다. 캠브릿지 사전에서는 이렇게 설명한다.

day in day out : (especially of something boring) done or happening every day for a long period of timeI have to do the same boring jobs day in day out.

즉, day in day out 은 오랜 기간에 걸친 지루한 일상을 표현할 때 사용한다.

Everyday is an adjective. You use it to describe something that is normal and not exciting or unusual in any way

오 헨리의 작품 중 'The gift of The Magi'라는 유명한 단편소설이 있다.

The ambassador, at all events, had passed a bad night, and his faultlessly careful toilet only threw into relief the frigid rancor in his eyes and the mottled tones of his refined complexion. (Henry James, The American, 'Ch. 24')

SEEK

If you seek something such as help, advice, or the solution to a problem, you try to obtain it.

- I was seeking the help of someone who spoke French.

- Always seek professional legal advice before entering into any agreement.

The past tense and past participle of seek is sought, not 'seeked'.

- Some units and formations sought the earliest opportunity to surrender.

- His views on the war were sought by the American press.

Seek is often used in writing, but you do not normally use it in conversation. Instead of saying that someone 'seeks' something, you usually say that they try to get it or try to find it.

- I tried to get their support for a trade union.

- They tried to find other work.

In modern English, you never say that someone seeks a person or an object. You say that they look for the person or object.

- I've been looking for you all over.

- I looked for it for ages before I found it.

FIND

If you find out or discover some information that is difficult to obtain, you succeed in obtaining it.

- Have you found out who killed my husband?

- Police discovered that he was hiding out in London.

You can also say that someone finds out facts that are easy to obtain.

- I found out the train times.

Be Careful!

Don't say that someone 'discovers' facts that are easy to obtain.

There is very little difference between for example and for instance. They have the same or nearly the same meaning, and they are used in the same way. Both of these expressions are used when a speaker or writer wants to introduce a specific person or thing that helps to explain or confirm a general statement. Note, however, that for example is used much more frequently than for instance, particularly in formal contexts, so in academic writing it is a safer choice.

Below are some examples with for example and for instance. In any of them, either expression could be used.
1.The situation is slowly improving. Last month, for example, the company achieved record sales in Europe.
2.It was obvious that her memory was failing. For example, she would often forget where she put her car keys.
3.A lot of my friends were there—John and Linda, for example.
4.Poor balance is a problem for a lot of older people, like my grandmother, for instance.
5.Mobile devices are becoming less expensive. Sophisticated smartphones, for instance, can now be purchased for less than $100.
