rancor는 '원한, 증오'를 의미한다. 

The ambassador, at all events, had passed a bad night, and his faultlessly careful toilet only threw into relief the frigid rancor in his eyes and the mottled tones of his refined complexion. (Henry James, The American, 'Ch. 24')

'악취가 나다, 썩다'는 뜻의 라틴어 rancēre에서 기원하였고, 후기 라틴어에서 rancor로 변형되어 고대불어를 거쳐 지금의 영어단어가 되었다.

'계급, 높은 지위'를 의미하는 rank도 여기에서 파생된 것으로 보이는데, 형용사로서는 '악취가 나는'이라는 뜻이다. 

동서양을 막론하고, 예나 지금이나 높은 지위에 있으면 구린내가 나는 것은 어쩔 수 없는 모양이다.
