1. so는 that과 결합하여 목적·결과를 나타내는 절을 도입한다.

- They hurried so that they would be on time.

- They were so close that I heard every word.

2. 목적을 나타내는 절에서는 일반적으로 조동사나 단순한 가정법의 동사를 사용한다.

- Turn the lantern so that we may see what it is.

3. 결과를 나타내는 절에서는 일반적으로 직설법의 동사를 사용한다.

- He turned the lantern so that I saw what it was.

4. 현대영어에서는 목적·결과를 나타내는 표현으로 so ~ as to do 를 사용한다.

- They hurried so as to be on time.

- Be so kind as to shut the door.

5. 구어에서는 so that 앞에서 휴지(休止)하여, 목적절을 결과절로 만든다.

- He is going to the lecture early so that he'll get a good seat. 좋은 자리를 얻으려고 강의에 일찍 간다.

→ He is going to the lecture early, so that he'll get a good seat. 강의에 일찍 나가니까, 좋은 자리를 얻을 것이다.
