the way와 how는 같이 쓰지 않는다. 그런데, 그 이유가 무엇인지 궁금해서 영어원서를 찾아 봤다.

먼저 가장 유명한 영문법원서인 Randolph Quirk의 "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" p.1254에서는 이렇게 설명한다.

There is no relative 'how' parallel to 'where, when', and 'why' to express manner with an antecedent noun [4], but only [4a]:

- That's the way how she spoke. [4] X

- That's how she spoke. [4a] O

- That's the way (that) she spoke.[4a] O

근래 유명한 영문법원서인 Rodney Huddleston 의 "The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language" p.1053는 이렇다.

[62]

i) Go back the way [(that) by which you came].

ii) I admired the way [( that) in which she handled the situation].

'How' does not belong to the class of relative words (except very marginally in the fused construction, §6.4), so we cannot have 'the way how she handled the situation'.  Note that if 'way' is replaced by 'manner' the non-'wh' construction is no longer possible: the manner (that) she handled the situation.

Some non-standard dialects differ; hence the line "It ain't what you do, it's the way how you do it" in a rock 'n' roll song.

보통 우리나라 영어강사들은 'the way = how' 이기 때문에 중첩사용할 필요가 없어서 둘 중 하나만 사용한다고 설명한다.

뭐, 아무튼 그렇다는 거고, 근데, It ain't what you do, it's the way how you do it. 이라는 가사가 들어간 록큰롤 노래는 어떤 것인지 구글을 검색해도 안나오는데, 궁금하다.

also, as well, too

1. 뜻은 비슷하지만, 사용하는 위치는 다르다.

ⓐ also는 동사와 같이.

ⓑ as well과 too는 주로 문장끝에.

ⓒ 격식체나 문어체에는 too를 주어 바로 뒤에 놓을 수 있다. 선동적인 연설을 하는 장면에서 자주 볼 수 있다.

I, too, would be among the dead! (Once Upon a Time, Season 1, Episode 15, 'Red-Handed')

ⓓ 미국에서는 as well을 잘 안쓴다.

2. 쓰임새

ⓐ 명령문에는 as well과 too을 주로 쓴다.

ⓑ "Me too."는 비격식체다. 격식을 차리려면, "So am I." 또는 "I am too."라고 한다. "I also."는 쓰지 않는다.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. 이라는 명언이 있다.

ⓐ 위 명언에서 굳이 day in and day out 이라고 표현한 이유가 있을 것 같다. 캠브릿지 사전에서는 이렇게 설명한다.

day in day out : (especially of something boring) done or happening every day for a long period of timeI have to do the same boring jobs day in day out.

즉, day in day out 은 오랜 기간에 걸친 지루한 일상을 표현할 때 사용한다.

ⓑ everyday 의 쓰임에 관해 콜린스코빌드 사전에서는 이렇게 설명한다.

Everyday is an adjective. You use it to describe something that is normal and not exciting or unusual in any way

즉, everyday는 중립적인 표현이다.

day after day 의 쓰임에 관해 옥스포드 사전에서는 이렇게 설명한다.

each day repeatedly (used especially when something is boring or annoying)

즉 day after day도 지루한 일상을 표현할 때 사용하지만, day in and day out 처럼 장기간에 방점이 있는 것은 아니다.
